Radio

The Assisi House Project encourages homeless people to make radio!

Doing radio is a great way to get people engaged in creative activities because there are so many elements to making a good radio programme, e.g.:

  • Deciding on a theme
  • Planning the show
  • Recording speech / interviewing / editing
  • Choosing and recording music / music intros and outros
  • Inserting jingles
  • Piecing the bits together in a multi track format and then mixing

We have to blame Bradford Community Broadcasting for inspiring us to do radio for the first time back in 2002.

Since September 2003, we have had our own programme on the BCB schedule called 'No Vacancies'. The programme is half an hour long and is a magazine programme dealing with issues related to homelessness in Bradford. It is broadcast twice every 4 weeks: once on a Thursday evening at 6.30pm, and then again on the following Friday lunchtime at 1:30pm.

Some of the principals which underpin the programme are as follows:

  • Maximum service user participation - including ideas for features, scripting, presenting, editing.
  • Regular involvement of other projects working in the homeless sector.
  • Features to be about 10 minutes in length, with music chosen by residents/service users in between.
  • Regular items about Bradford Speakout.

We are always on the lookout for people who would be interested in contributing to this show, so please get in touch with the Project (01274 666667) if you think you might be interested.

We like to share this slot with our friends who work in Refugee and Asylum support agencies in Bradford, so look out for our refugee specials, especially around the time of Refugee Week.
